Thinking about visiting a Chiropractor in Sheffield?
Here’s an overview of how we work at the Birley Chiropractic and Podiatry Clinic and what to expect if you do decide to visit us for a treatment.
As registered Chiropractors and primary healthcare professionals, we specialise in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of conditions affecting the body’s muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves, with a particular focus on the spine.
Many people think that Chiropractors only treat back pain, but chiropractic care can help with a much wider range of conditions. Our Chiropractors have experience treating patients with a variety of musculoskeletal problems and work with people of all ages and backgrounds.
More Than Just Back Pain
Your body works as a whole, and problems in one area can sometimes affect other parts of the body. Our Chiropractors take the time to understand your symptoms, how they are affecting your daily life and any factors that may be contributing to the problem.
We use a hands-on approach to care, combining chiropractic treatment with tailored advice and guidance where appropriate. Our aim is not simply to provide short-term relief, but to help you understand your condition, improve how your body functions and support your long-term health and wellbeing.

Experienced, Professional Care
Since opening our doors in 2008, we have welcomed and helped thousands of new patients at the clinic. Over the years, we have built a reputation for friendly, professional and personalised care.
We believe that every patient is different, which is why we don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach. Your treatment is tailored to you, your symptoms and your individual needs.
Our aim is to help you get out of pain, move more freely and feel better in your everyday life. Whether you have a recent injury, an ongoing problem or simply want to improve your mobility and wellbeing, our team is here to help.
You’re in Safe Hands
Choosing a healthcare professional is an important decision, and we want our patients to feel confident in the care they receive.
Our experienced team of Chiropractors all hold a Master’s degree in Chiropractic, and are registered with the General Chiropractic Council (GCC).
From your first appointment onwards, we will take the time to listen, assess your needs and explain your treatment options clearly, so you can feel informed and comfortable throughout your care.
What To Expect
If you are visiting us for the first time, your appointment will always begin with a consultation before any treatment takes place. We want to understand your problem properly and make sure that any treatment we provide is appropriate for you.
Your First Appointment
Before seeing your Chiropractor, you will be asked to complete a medical history questionnaire. Your Chiropractor will then talk through your medical history and ask you questions about your current complaint, including when your symptoms started, what makes them better or worse and how they are affecting your everyday life.
A thorough physical assessment will then be carried out. This allows your Chiropractor to assess your movement and identify the areas that may be contributing to your symptoms. Where appropriate, this will help your Chiropractor establish a working diagnosis and determine the most suitable approach to your care.
Once the assessment is complete, your Chiropractor will explain their findings to you in clear, straightforward terms. They will discuss your diagnosis, treatment options and what you can expect from the next stages of your care.
If we feel that your problem is not suitable for chiropractic treatment, we will tell you. We have developed good working relationships with local GPs and have referral procedures in place, allowing us to recommend further assessment or appropriate care when necessary.
Your Treatment
Our approach to care is evidence-informed and tailored to the individual. Your treatment will depend on your symptoms, assessment findings and personal circumstances, rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach.
Treatment may include a range of hands-on techniques designed to improve joint movement, reduce muscle tension and help relieve pain. For many patients, this may include a technique known as a chiropractic adjustment.
An adjustment is a controlled technique used to help improve movement in a restricted joint. Your Chiropractor uses their hands to apply a carefully controlled force to the appropriate area. Sometimes this can produce an audible popping or cracking sound. This sound is known as a cavitation and is associated with a rapid change in pressure within the joint.
Not every patient requires an adjustment, and your Chiropractor will discuss the techniques they recommend with you before treatment. Your comfort, safety and individual needs are always taken into consideration.
Other Treatment Techniques
Depending on your individual assessment and treatment plan, your Chiropractor may also use techniques such as:
- Stretching and mobility techniques
- Muscle release techniques
- Soft-tissue techniques
- Acupuncture or dry-needling techniques, where appropriate
- Rehabilitation and strengthening exercises
- Advice on posture, movement and everyday activities
Your Chiropractor will explain any techniques being used and answer any questions you may have.
Helping You Between Appointments
We believe that treatment is only one part of the recovery process. Where appropriate, your Chiropractor will provide you with personalised home-care advice and exercises to support your progress between appointments.
This may include simple exercises, stretches, mobility work or advice about how to manage activities that may be contributing to your symptoms.
Our aim is to give you the knowledge and tools to play an active role in your recovery, while providing hands-on care tailored to your individual needs.
